The Lower Saxony Stadium, home of the Reds since 1959, gets a face-lift.
Between 1954 and 1973 eleven international matches were played here, with up to 86,000 spectators squeezing into the stadium. The 2006 World Cup, which held some matches in Hannover, was reason enough to convert the Lower Saxony Stadium into a multi-functional football arena. The naming rights for the new stadium were bought by Hannover’s largest financial services provider AWD (Allgemeiner Wirtschaftsdienst), who together with the city of Hannover and Lower Saxony contributed a significant proportion of the finance towards the 65 million Euro cost of reconstruction. An investment that has paid off.
The new football stadium is finished!
The AWD-Arena has a capacity of 49,000. This includes 8,000 standing places, which can be changed to 4,000 seats as required. In addition there are 29 individual executive boxes in the East Stand, as well as 1,241 red business seats for hospitality purposes. The running track has also been removed allowing the fans to get much closer to the action for a more intense match-day experience – a football game becomes a breathtaking event. Another highlight of the multi-functional Arena is the transparent roof that is visible from as far away as Maschsee.
Arena-Tribune
The AWD-Stadium Reconstruction magazine
In order to keep Hannover 96’s fans and friends up to date with the progress of the building work in the AWD-Arena, the magazine “AWDarena Tribune” was created. The aim of its five editions was, through succinct, informative and entertaining writing, to show that the 729 day wait for the new AWD-Arena was definitely worth it.
