Player Profile
After the departure of Julian de Guzmans to Deportivo la Coruna the managment went on the search for a suitable successor for the small Canadian and his now vacant position in defensive midfield. They came across Hanno Balitsch, who was plying his trade at Mainz and director of football Ilja Kaenzig knew from his time at Leverkusen.
Hanno actually has his sporting roots in athletics. He used to be the Hessen youth high-jumping champion, however he has enjoyed even more success with the ball. He made his first appearance for the Germany U16s against Sweden whilst at SV Waldhof Mannheim, and he even managed to score on his debut. After that Balitsch progressed through all the teams up to the U21s. After two years as a professional in Mannheim the confident holding midfielder joined FC Köln in 2001, where he established himself as a first team player in his first season and made 24 Bundesliga appearances. After the “Billy Goats” were relegated from the Bundesliga Balitsch decided on a change and joined the league runners-up Bayer 04 Leverkusen. He also became a first team regular there.
National Coach Rudi Völler called him up to the full national side and on February 12th 2003, and Balitsch celebrated his debut for Germany against Spain in Palma de Mallorca. He has been called up on two further occasions.
The 24 year old gained further international kudos in the Champions League. He tasted life in Europe’s elite nine times before becoming one of the pillars of surprise promotion outfit FSV Mainz 05. Balitsch also became an immediate hit in Hannover. The midfield engine room established himself as an indispensable first team player and an indisputable leader.
